Explore traditional Swedish painting techniques through this unique two-day class. Bonadsmålning flourished in southern Sweden during the 18th and 19th centuries, when it was used to create wall decorations for modest country homes. Working on cloth or paper with homemade egg tempera, painters illustrated allegorical stories that blended biblical themes, Swedish history, and contemporary real life. With the guidance of folk artist Pieper Fleck Bloomquist, students will craft their own egg yolk-based paints, and create a folk-art painting to take home. Students are encouraged to make their own design patterns and templates are available, so this is an appropriate class for all skill levels. Suitable for ages 12+.
Please bring a pencil and paper for sketching and taking notes. Brushes are provided in class but experienced students are encouraged to bring a variety of their own supply and a basin for water. There will be two short introduction videos (17 minutes each) to watch prior to class.
Class format: combination lecture, demonstration, and hands-on guidance. Students can draw their own design on an 8” x 10” canvas, or make use of a pattern provided by the instructor. Throughout the class the instructor will demonstrate the first steps and then round among the students to assist while they return the demonstration on their own project.
Class fee includes all materials, fika and lunch.
