Picnic Day has its origins in the global movement to highlight the importance of spending time outdoors and enjoying food together. The word “picnic” itself comes from the French term “pique-nique,” which began to be used in Europe as early as the 1600s to describe social gatherings where participants brought their own food. In Sweden, the tradition of picnicking has become an important part of the culture, largely thanks to the concept of public access rights (“allemansrätten”), which allows everyone to enjoy nature freely. The themed day aims to inspire more people to take advantage of the opportunity to socialize outdoors, often with family and friends.
