Waffle day is celebrated every year on March 25 in connection to the feast of Marie Bebådelsedagen or Annunciation Day. It is celebrated 9 months before Christmas since it is believed to be the day that Archangel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she had been chosen to be the mother of Jesus.
The Swedish tradition of having waffles on this day stems from a misunderstanding. Annunciation Day in Swedish used to be called “Vårfrudagen” (Our Lady Day). Pronounced slightly wrong it became vafferdag and in some dialects vaffeldag. At the time this was the pronunciation of våffeldag. In addition, the end of March lent itself well to eating waffles since the end of winter brought more milk and eggs.
