Annual Jenny Lind Concert
June 18, 2017 @ 5:00 pm
Join the Swedish American Museum for our annual Jenny Lind concert on Sunday, June 18. The Royal Swedish Academy of Music has selected the 2017 “Jenny Lind” winner to perform in Sweden and the United States. This year’s program features opera singer Ylva Stenberg.
Ylva Stenberg was born and raised in Arvika. When Ylva was 13 years old, she changed her main interest from the violin to singing. Thanks to the non-profit musical theater association Volt, she could combine her two great interests singing and theater at an early age.
After graduating from Solberga high school, Ylva started studying music at Ingesund and Vadstena colleges between 2006 and 2012.
In 2012, Ylva began graduate training in opera at the College for Music Theater and Media in Hannover. Since the fall of 2016, her training evolved into studies at the Hannover Opera’s Opera Studio. This made it possible for Ylva to continue studying with vocal teacher Peter Anton Ling, singing in the opera studio’s various productions, as well as playing minor roles on the big house opera stage.
Ylva’s desire is now to have the opportunity to meet the Swedish audience through singing, and touch both the experienced opera audience as well as those who have never heard classical singing before.
In Germany, Ylva accumulated experience of all kinds – from major works with orchestra in church halls and opera houses to singing with an electric piano at a retirement home.
After four years abroad, and a contract that lasts for at least another two years, Ylva is beginning to feel homesick. It is with great pleasure that Ylva now takes on the role as the Jenny Lind scholar to meet the Swedish audience, and visit the places where Jenny Lind made a lasting impression in Canada and the USA. As Ylva herself puts it: “I want to get the ‘stamp of approval’ from my home country, to know that musical Sweden sends me out into the world with a clear conscience.”
Concert starts at 6 p.m. and is free.
